Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who can use Renew?

The product is suitable for anyone who wants to support his or her body’s natural renewal system. Suggested use is for 2 capsules at the same time each day.

Who should not use Renew?

There are no indications for anyone not to use Renew, but if you have a medical condition or are taking any prescription medication, we recommend that you consult with your health care professional.

What is the lay interpretation of the findings of the body of research conducted on Renew?

Dr. Bickford’s first research study reports the effect of the ingredients in the Renew formula on the proliferation (growth) of stem cells in vitro. Three types of adult stem cells were tested and were shown to increase the proliferation by as much as 70% in vitro. Subsequent research articles demonstrate that this formula can act to promote healing via an antioxidant protective effect and interaction with stem cell populations:

Where are stem cells found in the body?

Adult stem cells have been identified in many organs and tissues including the brain and heart.

Is an increase in the proliferation of stem cells in the bone marrow linked to health improvements?

The data that has been presented shows that this formula will increase the viability and number of human bone marrow, CD34+, and CD133+ cells.  The latter two reside in the bone marrow and are released into the circulation at times when they are needed for repair.  At the time of injury or when signals are sent out by the body for stem cells, the cells in the bone marrow are primed and ready for action. This product supports the natural repair system in our bodies.

What are bone marrow, CD34+, and CD133+ cells?

The bone marrow is one of the places in the body where many stem cells are located and thus is a source of stem cell population. The CD34+ and CD133+ cells are specific types of stem cells that are released from the bone marrow into the blood.

Since the original testing was done in vitro, will the product have any effect in the body (in vitro)?

The data presented is published in peer-reviewed scientific literature. To date, the published literature on Renew shows data on human stem cells in culture (in vitro) as well as in animals (in vitro). The animal studies are available through this link:

Human studies are continuing on this formulation to show the effect in the body. The results of ongoing studies indicate positive effects in vitro.

The original study estimated the number of stem cells by a process known as MTT cell proliferation assay, which measures mitochondrial activity. Is this a good measure of stem cell count?

Studies have shown that the MTT assay accurately reflects the number of stem cells in the culture and this is the reason that this assay was chosen by the scientists who did the research.

Does the body produce only a limited number of stem cells per day?

The body normally produces a certain “limited” amount of stem cells per day. For consumers of this product, researchers predict that more stem cells will be available in the bone marrow and other parts of the body.

Does Renew stop working after a period of use?

In vitro animal testing data suggests that the product works for continued periods of time, priming the stem cells to be ready when needed by the body.

What evidence shows that Renew is safe for long-term use?

Renew is a combination of several natural ingredients (blueberries, green tea, vitamin D, Wild Bluegreen Mind microalgae, and carnosine, a naturally-occurring amino acid) that have been consumed by humans for decades or, in the case of blueberries and green tea, hundreds of years without adverse effects.

Does Renew need to be taken with food or can it be taken by itself?

Renew can be taken with or without food. Taking Renew with food may slightly increase the absorption of fat-soluble substances like vitamin D.

Should you take both capsules of Renew at the same time?

It is best to take both capsules at the same time. Renew is formulated to match the concentration that was used in the research.

Is there any advantage to taking more than the recommended amount of two capsules of Renew per day?

We have no data beyond the recommended amount of two capsules of Renew per day. We have no reason to believe that there is further benefit from taking more than two capsules per day. Since toxicity can occur from consuming large amounts of vitamin D, we don’t recommend taking more than four capsules per day.

Is there caffeine in the green tea extract?

The green tea extract in Renew contains very little caffeine. In the final formula, the amount of caffeine is less than 10 mg per serving. As a comparison, an 8-oz cup of coffee contains 60-150 mg.

What form of vitamin D is used in Renew?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form of vitamin D used in this product. It is obtained from lanolin, an oil that is pressed from wool.

What is the source of carnosine?

Carnosine is derived from a microbial fermentation process — similar to how fungal enzymes are produced. Carnosine is sometimes derived from feathers or hair, but after carefully researching this matter with our vendor, we determined that the carnosine we use is not derived from an animal source. It is derived from a microbial fermentation process.

Is Renew suitable for animals?

Renew was formulated for human consumption. One must exercise caution when using this product for animals. For example, while the benefits of adequate dietary vitamin D are well established in dogs, the potential deleterious effects of over-supplementation of vitamin D should also be acknowledged. Since one capsule of Renew contains 1,000 IU vitamin D, supplementing a dog’s diet with Renew should be discussed with the animal’s veterinarian. By extension, it is wise to consult with a health care practitioner before incorporating nutritional supplements into any animal’s dietary regimen.
